Uzbekistan and Tajikistan Hold Historic First Supreme Interstate Council Meeting

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon held high-level talks at the Kuksaroy residence on March 26, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations as the two leaders convened the first meeting of the Supreme Interstate Council.
Describing the Tajik president’s state visit as a historic occasion, President Mirziyoyev подчеркнул that it represents a key step toward further strengthening the enduring ties of friendship, good neighborliness, and mutual respect between the two countries. He noted that the newly established Council would serve as an important mechanism to elevate strategic partnership and alliance to a new level through concrete initiatives and practical outcomes.
Both sides expressed satisfaction over the growing intensity of contacts between their governments, parliaments, and institutions. In preparation for the visit, a series of events were successfully organized, including a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, an industrial exhibition, and forums involving regional leaders, academics, youth, and analytical centers. Cultural engagement was also highlighted, with the ongoing Days of Tajik Culture and Cinema in Uzbekistan.
During the talks, the leaders reviewed key areas of cooperation and explored new opportunities to enhance mutually beneficial collaboration. Particular focus was placed on boosting trade, expanding industrial cooperation, improving transport connectivity, and strengthening water and energy security.
Bilateral trade turnover has approached $1 billion, driven largely by increased exchanges of finished goods. Both sides assessed the potential to double this figure to $2 billion by 2030, supported by initiatives such as the accelerated establishment of the “Oybek–Fotekhobod” border trade center, implementation of digital systems for certification and permit exchange under the “E-Permit” framework, and modernization of border infrastructure.
The meeting also underscored progress in joint projects across sectors including industry, construction, agriculture, textiles, electrical engineering, and pharmaceuticals. Enhanced connectivity between the two nations—via air, rail, and road links—has contributed to a steady rise in freight volumes.
Leaders highlighted the importance of expanding the capital base of the joint Investment Company to finance priority projects and announced the launch of new joint initiatives in both countries. Discussions also covered cooperation in energy, water management, and transportation, with a shared commitment to unlocking further potential in these areas.
In addition, both presidents agreed to strengthen interregional cooperation and promote humanitarian, educational, and scientific exchanges. A proposal was advanced to implement a five-year plan aimed at deepening cultural ties, particularly in light of the significant diasporas in both countries.
On regional and international issues, the leaders reaffirmed the importance of maintaining close dialogue and mutual support within multilateral frameworks, particularly in Central Asia. They also agreed to enhance coordination in the field of security.
The meeting included reports by the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Commission— the prime ministers of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan—on priority areas of cooperation. At its conclusion, both sides agreed to adopt a comprehensive roadmap to ensure the effective implementation of all agreements reached.
