UK Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in Sahara Following High-Level Talks in London

London, The Gulf Observer: The United Kingdom has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for peace” in the Sahara, following high-level discussions held in London between British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
In statements issued after the meeting, the UK reaffirmed its longstanding position on the Sahara issue, endorsing Morocco’s proposal as a constructive and realistic framework for resolving the protracted dispute. The stance aligns with commitments previously outlined during the Morocco–UK Strategic Dialogue held in Rabat in June last year.
The joint communiqué from that dialogue underscored the importance of all parties engaging in good faith with the United Nations-led political process, which remains the central mechanism for achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution.
London further emphasized its intention to continue supporting diplomatic efforts toward a negotiated settlement at bilateral, regional, and international levels, reinforcing its commitment to advancing dialogue and stability.
Beyond the Sahara issue, both sides highlighted the depth and strategic importance of UK–Morocco relations. Discussions also focused on expanding cooperation across political, economic, and development sectors, with particular attention to opportunities arising from the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal.
The meeting reflects a broader deepening of ties between Rabat and London, with both countries reaffirming their shared commitment to long-term partnership and collaboration on regional and global priorities.
