OECD Ranks Tajikistan Among Top Reformers in Europe and Central Asia

Central Asia

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has identified Tajikistan as one of the top three reforming economies in Europe and Central Asia for the 2022–2024 period, citing substantial improvements in the country’s trade facilitation and regulatory environment.

According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan (Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan), the recognition reflects a series of structural reforms aimed at modernising trade procedures, enhancing digital transparency, and reducing administrative barriers affecting cross-border commerce.

The OECD assessment highlights that Tajikistan has made notable progress in streamlining trade-related processes, including the reduction of paperwork, improvements in regional infrastructure connectivity, and stronger alignment of national trade practices with international standards.

A key factor cited in the report is the development and expansion of the Tajikistan Trade Portal, which has significantly improved since 2022. The platform is described as an important digital tool for exporters, enabling easier access to regulatory information and simplifying compliance with trade requirements.

The OECD further noted that, across Europe and Central Asia, the average reduction in paper-based trade barriers between 2022 and 2024 stood at 3.1%. In contrast, Tajikistan recorded a reduction of more than 12%, which authorities have described as a major achievement in reducing border inefficiencies and excessive administrative procedures.

Officials in Dushanbe have stated that the progress underscores the government’s commitment to improving the business climate, strengthening trade competitiveness, and accelerating integration with regional and global markets.
