Azerbaijan Expects Key Rail and Highway Projects to Reach Armenian Border by Early 2027
Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan is making rapid progress in fulfilling its infrastructure commitments, with major railway and highway projects expected to reach the border with Armenia by early 2027, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov announced on Tuesday.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Ignazio Cassis, Federal Councillor and Head of Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Bayramov said Azerbaijan is advancing strategic transport projects aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and expanding international transit routes.
The foreign minister noted that the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic already has an approximately 180-kilometre railway network. However, because the line has remained out of operation for nearly three decades, it requires extensive reconstruction and fresh investment. He said rehabilitation work has already commenced to restore the railway.
Bayramov also highlighted the strategic importance of the Kars-Iğdır-Dilucu railway project, stating that construction is progressing successfully in Türkiye.
He said the completion of the railway will create new opportunities for regional development by restoring transport links between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The project is also expected to strengthen the East–West transport corridor and the Middle Corridor, enhancing trade and connectivity across the wider region.
The Azerbaijani foreign minister underscored that the timely implementation of these transport initiatives will contribute to improved regional cooperation, economic integration, and more efficient international transit networks.
