Denmark Assumes UN Security Council Presidency for August

Copenhagen, The Gulf Observer: Denmark has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August, taking responsibility for steering the Council’s agenda and chairing its meetings on key international peace and security issues.

The presidency of the 15-member Security Council rotates monthly among its member states. During its term, Denmark will oversee the Council’s programme of work, convene meetings, facilitate negotiations, and coordinate discussions on pressing global security challenges.

According to the United Nations, Denmark’s presidency will focus on several priority issues during August, including an open debate on the link between conflict and hunger, alongside discussions on a range of ongoing international crises and peacekeeping matters.

Denmark’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Christina Markus Lassen, is presiding over the Council’s work during the month. She has also indicated that the Security Council is aiming to hold a second informal straw poll on August 21 as part of the process to recommend the next UN Secretary-General.

As Security Council president, Denmark will play a central role in managing the Council’s deliberations, promoting dialogue among member states, and guiding the adoption of resolutions and presidential statements on matters related to international peace and security.
