Azerbaijan Officially Applies to Join BRICS

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan has officially submitted its application to join the BRICS group, according to an announcement by Aykhan Hajizada, the spokesperson for the country’s Foreign Ministry, NHC reports. This significant move aligns with Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to enhance its global partnerships and strategic alliances.

The application follows the adoption of the “Joint Declaration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Republic of China on Establishing a Strategic Partnership” on July 3 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Astana. Paragraph 4.5 of the declaration specifically highlights Azerbaijan’s intention to join BRICS, a move welcomed by China.

BRICS, originally established in 2006, is an influential intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group’s membership has since expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, reflecting its growing significance on the global stage.

The BRICS group was initially formed to unite the world’s most important developing countries, providing a platform to challenge the political and economic dominance of wealthier nations in North America and Western Europe. With Azerbaijan’s application, the group may soon add another strategically positioned nation, further diversifying its membership and strengthening its collective influence.
