Azerbaijan’s National NGO Forum Receives Observer Status at UN Environment Programme
Baku, The Gulf Observer: The National NGO Forum of Azerbaijan (NNFA) has been granted official observer status at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its governing bodies, marking a significant step in strengthening the participation of Azerbaijani civil society in global environmental initiatives.
According to an official notification from Radhika Ochalik, Director of the Governance Affairs Office of UNEP, the decision was approved following a comprehensive review of the Forum’s credentials and submitted documentation.
The accreditation allows the NNFA to participate as an observer in all open meetings and sessions of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and its subsidiary bodies, providing the organization with an opportunity to engage in international discussions on key environmental issues.
Ramil Iskandarli, Chairman of the Board of the NNFA, said the recognition reflects the growing international standing of Azerbaijani civil society and creates new opportunities for non-governmental organizations in the country to contribute to global governance processes.
The observer status will enable the NNFA to participate in international deliberations on climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development, while representing the perspectives and priorities of Azerbaijani civil society on global platforms.
Under UNEP’s operational procedures, accredited observer organizations are required to submit activity reports to the UNEP Secretariat every four years, ensuring continued engagement and accountability within the framework of the programme.
The NNFA’s accreditation is expected to further expand Azerbaijan’s civil society engagement in international environmental cooperation and support broader efforts toward sustainable development.
