Bulgarian PM Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Amid Historic Ceasefire Agreement

Sofia, The Gulf Observer: Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov has reiterated his country’s steadfast support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need to bolster Ukraine’s position to secure a just and lasting peace. Zhelyazkov made the remarks via a post on social media platform “X”, following his participation in a virtual conference of the “coalition of the willing” for Ukraine.

“Bulgaria continuously supports Ukraine since the beginning of the war. We must all bring Ukraine in the strongest position to achieve a just and lasting peace,” Zhelyazkov stated.

The virtual summit, held with heads of state and government, marked a significant moment in diplomatic efforts to end the war. For the first time, leaders from France, Germany, the UK, and Poland joined their Ukrainian counterparts in a unified virtual dialogue. Participants included French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

During the conference, the leaders reached a landmark agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, endorsing an unconditional 30-day ceasefire effective May 12, covering land, air, and sea operations. The agreement aims to create space for renewed diplomatic efforts and humanitarian relief.

Notably, the ceasefire deal has also gained the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump, who participated in the summit via conference call, signaling transatlantic alignment on the issue.

The agreement aligns with the conclusion of a unilateral three-day ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which ends the same day. Though no official Russian endorsement of the broader ceasefire has been issued, international observers are cautiously hopeful that momentum for de-escalation may grow.

Zhelyazkov’s remarks and Bulgaria’s ongoing involvement reflect the country’s active role in European security and solidarity with Ukraine amidst ongoing hostilities. The Bulgarian government continues to advocate for a diplomatic resolution based on sovereignty, international law, and regional stability.
