China’s Shenhai Yihao Ultra-Deepwater Gas Field Surpasses 9 Billion Cubic Meters of Natural Gas Output
Beijing, The Gulf Observer: China’s first independently developed ultra-deepwater gas field, Shenhai Yihao (Deep Sea No.1), has achieved a significant milestone, recording an accumulated natural gas output of over 9 billion cubic meters, alongside 900,000 cubic meters of oil production since its operations began on June 25, 2021.
Shenhai Yihao, the deepest gas field of its kind in China, is located 150 kilometers off the coast of Sanya, in south China’s Hainan province, and operates at a maximum depth of over 1,500 meters. Managed by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), it marks a major advancement in the country’s energy sector.
The gas field is expected to play a key role in China’s energy security. Once its phase II project is fully operational, CNOOC anticipates increasing its peak annual output from 3 billion cubic meters to 4.5 billion cubic meters. The project boasts natural gas reserves exceeding 50 billion cubic meters and involves extensive infrastructure, including 12 deepwater gas wells, a comprehensive processing platform weighing over 14,000 tonnes, and five submarine pipelines totaling approximately 250 kilometers.
Shenhai Yihao’s development underscores China’s growing capabilities in deepwater resource extraction and its commitment to strengthening its energy security with domestic projects.
