Indonesia Aims to Complete Nationwide School Revitalization by 2029
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to complete a nationwide school revitalization programme by 2029, following the renovation of 17,000 schools in 2025 and a target to renovate 71,744 additional schools in 2026.
Addressing the State of the Nation at the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) in Jakarta on Friday, President Prabowo said the programme would be accelerated over the coming years to ensure that all schools across Indonesia meet appropriate standards.
He said the government planned to expand the number of schools undergoing revitalization to 100,000 in 2027 and another 100,000 in 2028, with the ultimate objective of ensuring that every school in the country is fully renovated by 2029.
President Prabowo stressed that the programme also covers underdeveloped, frontier and outermost regions, commonly known as 3T areas.
He highlighted the renovation of schools on remote islands, including Miangas, and said the government had established a dedicated task force to support development efforts in the country’s remote island communities.
The president said the revitalization programme would be further accelerated in 2027 and 2028 to achieve the 2029 target.
He emphasized that by 2029 there should be no damaged classrooms or unsafe school buildings in Indonesia, adding that every school should provide a safe, clean and suitable environment for learning.
President Prabowo also stressed the importance of adequate sanitation facilities, saying every school should have proper restrooms for students and staff.
Meanwhile, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti said his ministry had sought additional funding from the Ministry of Finance to support the government’s school revitalization targets.
“We have requested additional funds from the Finance Ministry for 2027,” Mu’ti said following the president’s presentation of the 2027 draft state budget and financial note before parliament.
The nationwide school revitalization programme forms part of the Indonesian government’s broader efforts to improve educational infrastructure, expand equal access to quality learning facilities and ensure that students in both urban and remote areas benefit from safe and adequate school environments.
