Indonesia and UK Strengthen Collaboration on Blue Economy Development

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Dominic Jermey, have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral collaboration in marine and fisheries sustainability. The discussions centered on advancing the blue economy, as well as enhancing conservation efforts, aquaculture, and modern fishing practices.

The meeting, held in Jakarta, followed President Prabowo Subianto’s recent state visit to London, during which he and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed to revitalize ties between the two nations, including in marine and fisheries cooperation.

“This collaboration encompasses initiatives in the blue economy, conservation, and the development of modern and sustainable fishing vessels,” Minister Trenggono stated. He emphasized the need for joint management of conservation areas, noting their critical role in carbon emission absorption and addressing climate change.

The UK’s Blue Planet Fund is playing a significant role in supporting sustainable conservation and fisheries resource management in Indonesia, Ambassador Jermey highlighted. He added, “Strengthening cooperation in the marine and fisheries sectors aligns with President Prabowo’s vision for Indonesia’s development.”

The discussions also included strategic programs initiated by President Prabowo, such as the Free Nutritious Meals program for school-aged children and mothers, food self-sufficiency, and achieving an 8 percent economic growth target.

Minister Trenggono acknowledged the synergy between these programs and the marine and fisheries sector, emphasizing their shared potential to drive sustainability and economic growth. This marks the second meeting between Minister Trenggono and Ambassador Jermey since Trenggono’s reappointment in October 2024.

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in marine resource management, contributing to the broader goals of climate resilience and economic prosperity.
