Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia has claimed the overall championship at the 20th World Pencak Silat Championship and the 5th Junior World Pencak Silat Championship, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from December 18 to 22.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo celebrated the achievement and expressed aspirations to have pencak silat included as an Olympic sport in the future.

Highlighting the global appeal of pencak silat, Ariotedjo noted the participation of around 1,100 athletes from 57 countries, demonstrating the sport’s potential on the international stage. “This championship is proof that pencak silat is gaining popularity worldwide,” the minister remarked.

Indonesia sent a delegation of 170 athletes to showcase the nation’s prowess and to promote the traditional martial art. The athletes delivered an outstanding performance, securing 11 gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals in the 20th World Pencak Silat Championship.
