Indonesia Emphasizes Global Cooperation and Stability as BRICS Member at WEF 2025

Davos, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s inclusion as a full member of the BRICS bloc aims to bridge the gap between developed and developing nations while generating significant economic benefits, according to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi Sugiono. Speaking at a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Thursday, January 23, Sugiono underscored Indonesia’s intention to foster cooperation with both regional neighbors and the broader global community.
Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia remains committed to pursuing a constructive approach in global cooperation, which includes active participation in BRICS. He further highlighted that under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s diplomacy will prioritize upholding the country’s sovereignty and advancing the well-being of its citizens, as outlined in Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution.
“The prerequisite for growth is peace and stability,” Sugiono affirmed, adding that Indonesia remains open to international partnerships that support its national priorities and serve the Indonesian people.
In a show of solidarity, Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta, also a speaker at the panel, commended Indonesia’s diplomatic efforts, particularly its support for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN. The panel discussion, which focused on navigating conflicts in the Asia-Pacific, also featured Speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives Martin Romualdez, Michael Froman of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the CEO of Zurich Insurance Group for the Asia-Pacific region.
Apart from his participation in the panel on regional conflicts, Foreign Minister Sugiono also attended a diplomatic discussion on the Myanmar issue. During his visit to Davos, he held bilateral meetings with Yemeni Vice President Aidarous Al-Zoubaidi, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, and Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud.
Sugiono’s presence at the WEF is part of Indonesia’s broader efforts to strengthen its international partnerships, engage in crucial regional dialogues, and contribute to global peace and prosperity.
