Indonesia to Build International-Standard National Sports Center in West Java’s Rancabungur

Bogor, The Gulf Observer: The Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced that the national sports center planned in Rancabungur, Bogor District, West Java, will be developed with international-standard facilities covering a wide range of disciplines, from aquatics and athletics to rowing.
The Ministry’s Secretary, Gunawan Suswantoro, said the planned National Sports Academy and National Team Training Center will support the development of 21 priority sports designated by President Prabowo Subianto. The initiative aims to produce world-class athletes through a structured long-term training system.
“The goal is to train selected athletes to become world-class athletes,” Suswantoro said on Monday.
The integrated sports complex will be constructed on approximately 500 hectares of land allocated by the central government in the Candali–Cimulang area of Rancabungur Sub-district. The facilities will be developed in an integrated manner, combining training venues, educational institutions, sports research centers, and athlete dormitories.
The planned infrastructure includes facilities for aquatics, athletics, badminton, rock climbing, football, martial arts, and rowing, all of which are among Indonesia’s 21 priority sports.
In addition to training infrastructure, the complex will also include a dedicated sports school covering elementary, middle, and high school levels to support the long-term development of young athletes across the country.
According to Suswantoro, athletes admitted to the academy will be selected from across Indonesia based on potential and performance in their respective disciplines.
The project is estimated to cost around Rp5 trillion (approximately US$277 million) and will be implemented over a three-year period. The government is currently focusing on inter-ministerial coordination and administrative synchronization to ensure efficient execution of the project.
Physical construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and continue through 2028, with completion targeted for early 2029.
Bogor District Head Rudy Susmanto said the broader area prepared for development spans around 750 hectares, including 500 hectares managed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and an additional 250 hectares allocated to the Ministry of Defense. He noted that the remaining land will be used to expand facilities for the Indonesian Army’s special forces unit (Kopassus) and to establish a university, further expanding the region’s strategic and educational functions.
