Indonesian President Calls for Stronger Economic Growth to Support Palestine at D-8 Summit
Cairo, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged fellow members of the Developing 8 (D-8) group to focus on strengthening economic growth as a means of providing greater support to Palestine. His remarks were made during the 11th D-8 Summit in Cairo on Thursday, December 19.
In his speech, President Subianto emphasized the importance of unity among D-8 nations in order to overcome current geopolitical challenges. “If we are weak, how can we support Palestine? Therefore, excellencies, let us harness our collaboration and drive economic growth,” he stated.
The president highlighted that enhancing industrial capabilities and advancing technological innovation are crucial for bolstering the region’s economies. He also called for greater collaboration within the D-8 to help make the Muslim world more prosperous and tackle poverty.
President Subianto further urged D-8 members to unite in advocating for the aspirations of the Global South and Muslims, positioning the group as a catalyst for positive change. He reaffirmed Indonesia’s unwavering commitment to this shared vision, stressing the need for the D-8 to serve as a beacon of hope for all nations.
Accompanying President Subianto at the summit were Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno, and Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt Lutfi Rauf.
In addition to the summit, President Subianto also met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Wednesday, December 18, to discuss bilateral and regional matters.
The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, established in 1997, consists of eight member countries – Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkiye – all of which are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
