Iran Increases High-Enrichment of Uranium, Says IAEA Chief

High-Enrichment of Uranium

Vienna, The Gulf Observer: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi has confirmed that Iran has significantly increased its high-level uranium enrichment, while expressing hope for renewed engagement with Iranian officials.

Grossi made the statement during a press conference at the opening of the IAEA Board of Governors’ quarterly meeting in Vienna on Monday. He underscored the necessity of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to address concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities.

“My visit to Tehran last November, and meetings with President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicate that there may be room for constructive compromises. I hope to see them again soon and pursue effective dialogue and tangible results,” Grossi stated.

The IAEA chief presented his latest report on verification and monitoring in Iran under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), highlighting a sharp increase in Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

“Following my last report, Iran’s stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60% U‑235 has increased to 275 kg, up from 182 kg in the past quarter,” he revealed.

Grossi also noted that it has been four years since Iran ceased implementing its nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This includes the suspension of its provisional application of the Additional Protocol, which has hindered the IAEA’s ability to conduct complementary access inspections in Iran.

The IAEA continues to urge Iran to resume compliance with its nuclear obligations and ensure transparency regarding its nuclear program. Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue as the international community seeks to address the escalating concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.
