Malaysia’s Diplomatic Ties with the United States Remain Strong: Anwar Ibrahim
Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: Malaysia’s diplomatic relations with the United States remain steadfast, with ongoing collaboration in investment, trade, and diplomatic sectors, despite the upcoming departure of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed confidence that these positive ties will persist even with the transition to a new US president and administration.
In response to a query during Minister Questions Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar highlighted that bilateral trade between Malaysia and the United States had seen a remarkable increase of 29.1% from January to October 2024, reaching RM264.28 billion (US$57.76 billion), up from RM204.78 billion (US$45.09 billion) during the same period in 2023. This surge underscores the strength of their economic partnership.
Anwar further revealed that 1,321 projects have been launched, with total investments amounting to US$39 billion (RM173 billion), signaling a robust economic relationship between the two nations. These developments indicate Malaysia’s commitment to sustaining strong economic ties with the US, despite any political shifts.
The Prime Minister also addressed concerns raised by RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) regarding the potential risk of trade sanctions from the US due to Malaysia’s firm stance on defending Palestinian rights. Anwar clarified that while Malaysia continues to voice its position on international matters, such as the oppression in Palestine and Gaza, these concerns will not hinder Malaysia’s economic engagements with the US.
“While economic considerations are crucial, they will not sway Malaysia’s commitment to standing firm on issues of justice, particularly in relation to Palestine,” said Anwar. He expressed that the focus should remain on fundamental matters of justice, rather than economic interests.
As the US prepares for a new administration, Prime Minister Anwar assured that Malaysia will continue to engage diplomatically and economically to the best of its abilities while maintaining its principled stance on global issues.
