Morocco Hosts AU Training to Strengthen Election Observation and Democratic Governance

Morocco

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: The fifth specialized training program for African Union election observers commenced in Rabat, underscoring deepening cooperation between Morocco and the African Union (AU) in promoting democratic governance across the continent.

Organized jointly by the African Union Commission and Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the program has brought together 87 prospective observers from across Africa to enhance their capacity to monitor and support electoral processes.

Addressing the opening session, Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, emphasized that democracy in Africa must evolve beyond the act of voting to deliver tangible “peace dividends” for citizens. He stressed the importance of inclusive governance, ensuring active participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in democratic systems.

Adeoye highlighted that strengthening institutions through transparent and credible elections is essential to building public trust and long-term stability. He noted that the training initiative aims to develop a broader pool of qualified observers who can be deployed across AU member states to support electoral integrity and ensure that outcomes are respected.

The program also reflects the AU’s commitment to raising standards in election observation and reinforcing democratic norms across the continent.

Morocco’s role in hosting the initiative further reinforces its growing position as a key partner in supporting AU-led diplomatic and capacity-building efforts, particularly in the areas of governance and institutional development.
