Myanmar Commemorates 79th Fire Brigade Day Amid Tributes and Renewed Commitment to Safety

Yangon, The Gulf Observer: Union Minister for Home Affairs, Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, presided over the 79th Anniversary of Myanmar Fire Brigade Day held in Yangon, where the nation paid tribute to its firefighters and reaffirmed its commitment to fire safety and disaster response.
The ceremony began with a one-minute silence in honor of the victims of the Mandalay earthquake that struck on 28 March 2025, claiming hundreds of lives and leaving significant destruction in its wake.
In his address, the Union Minister highlighted that between 2015 and 2024, Myanmar experienced approximately 18,000 fire incidents, resulting in an estimated loss exceeding K192 billion. He emphasized that stronger fire safety efforts are only possible through the active participation and cooperation of the public.
Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung praised the heroism and sacrifices of the Fire Services Department, which has played a crucial role in fire suppression, rescue operations, and disaster response over generations. He also noted the department’s exemplary performance during the Mandalay earthquake, where they collaborated with regional and international rescue teams, helping to rescue 653 survivors and recover 789 deceased individuals.
Calling for modernization, the minister stressed the need to enhance the fire brigade’s manpower, equipment, and technological capabilities to meet future challenges and operate at a global standard. He noted that the department’s efforts have earned the commendation of the international search and rescue community.
During the ceremony, the minister presented awards to distinguished individuals, including veteran singer U Tun Shwe, two over-90-year-old regular firefighters, and members of the auxiliary fire brigade, including medal-winning personnel. The Regional Chief Minister also honored outstanding members for their service.
The event concluded with the minister and attending dignitaries touring an exhibition showcasing modern firefighting equipment and search and rescue tools, highlighting Myanmar’s ongoing investment in safety and emergency preparedness.
