Oman, Algeria Sign MoU to Launch Smart Water Metering Pilot Project

Algiers, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria have strengthened their cooperation in smart water management by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement a pilot project for an Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) using LoRaWAN technology.

The MoU was signed in the Algerian capital between OTEC Company, represented by Future Cities Company (Tadom), the Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company (Nama Water Services), and the Water and Sanitation Company of Algiers (SEAAL). The agreement aims to enhance collaboration in deploying advanced digital solutions to improve water metering efficiency and optimize water resource management.

The agreement was concluded at the end of a three-day official visit by an Omani delegation to Algeria, led by Dr. Ali Amir Al Shidhani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology. The visit focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in technology, digital transformation, and the adoption of smart systems for public utility services.

Under the pilot project, the first phase will cover 100 customer accounts within a designated geographical area. The initiative includes the supply of ultrasonic water meters, supervision of their installation, wireless communications network planning, installation of terminal stations and connectivity components, and integration with a locally hosted cloud system.

The project will utilize LoRaWAN technology to enable efficient, secure, and reliable remote water meter reading, reducing operational costs while improving data accuracy and service delivery.

Officials said the initiative reflects the commitment of Oman and Algeria to exchange expertise, promote technological innovation, and advance sustainable digital solutions in the water sector. The partnership is expected to serve as a model for future smart infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing resource management and supporting digital transformation in public services.
