Oman Commemorates Arab Human Rights Day with Symposium on "The Right to Food"

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman organized a symposium today titled “The Right to Food” to mark Arab Human Rights Day, observed annually on March 16.

Held at the Diplomatic Club, the symposium aimed to raise public awareness about advancing human rights in line with international and regional conventions. The event also highlighted the Sultanate of Oman’s ongoing efforts to enhance food security and strengthen related national policies.

The symposium was held under the auspices of Sheikh Khalifa Ali Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs, and was organized by the Oman Human Rights Commission in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry.

During the symposium, discussions focused on national and regional legislation surrounding the right to food security. The event underscored Oman’s commitment to supporting humanitarian issues, particularly the rights of the Palestinian people.

In his speech, Saleh Yahya Al Maskari, Head of the Global Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry, emphasized that the right to food encompasses not only the availability of food but also its diversity, affordability, and accessibility. He condemned the worsening food crisis in Gaza due to Israel’s closure of crossings and the prevention of humanitarian aid, calling it a violation of international conventions and humanitarian law.

Al Maskari reiterated Oman’s strong commitment to ensuring food security and improving food supply systems across the country.

Dr. Rashid Hamad Al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Human Rights Commission, also addressed the symposium, emphasizing that the event reflects the Arab nations’ ongoing commitment to protecting human rights in accordance with regional and international conventions.
