Pakistan and Denmark Strengthen Maritime Cooperation with $2 Billion Partnership

Islamabad, The Gulf Observer: Pakistan and Denmark have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing global trade competitiveness through a groundbreaking $2 billion partnership aimed at modernising Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure, improving port operations, and promoting sustainable practices. This commitment was formally reiterated during a meeting between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf on Monday.

According to an official press statement, the two sides agreed to expedite the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year. Danish shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk is set to lead the investment drive, which will focus on upgrading Pakistan’s logistics infrastructure and integrating green maritime technologies, including renewable energy-powered ports and energy-efficient shipping.

Both parties stressed the importance of workforce development and strengthening cultural ties as part of their broader cooperation. The discussions also highlighted the adoption of sustainable maritime technologies designed to reduce emissions and boost environmental efficiency at Pakistani ports. Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind will be integrated into port operations, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Minister Chaudhry emphasised that Pakistan is taking decisive steps to embrace eco-friendly maritime practices, positioning the country as a responsible trading partner. “These initiatives will not only improve the environmental footprint of our ports but also foster long-term economic and environmental sustainability,” he said.

In line with these goals, maritime professionals in Pakistan will receive specialized training to manage eco-friendly vessels and port facilities.

The statement also noted that Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc is expected to visit Pakistan this week for discussions with the Prime Minister and senior government officials. The visit will further solidify the bilateral partnership and explore additional avenues for cooperation.

Minister Chaudhry underscored the significant economic benefits of adopting green shipping practices, stating that these efforts would enhance Pakistan’s global brand image, improve export competitiveness, and lower operational costs at its ports.

The $2 billion partnership represents a major step forward in Pakistan’s maritime sector, signalling a new era of sustainable trade practices and international cooperation.
