Pakistan, Iran Pledge to Deepen Bilateral Trade, Investment and Regional Security

Tehran, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and working jointly to promote peace, security, and development in the region.

During wide-ranging delegation-level talks held at the Sa’dabad Palace in Tehran, the two leaders agreed to intensify cooperation in key sectors, including trade, investment, energy, and counterterrorism, while underscoring the importance of sustained dialogue and mutual respect.

Addressing a joint press conference following the talks, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the meeting as “productive and useful,” emphasizing the shared resolve to elevate Pakistan-Iran relations to new heights. “There was total agreement that the two brotherly neighbouring countries must enhance cooperation in diverse fields including trade, investment, and economy,” he said.

Highlighting the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between the two nations, the Prime Minister said both sides had decided to transform these longstanding relations into “productive cooperation across various fields of life.”

Prime Minister Sharif also expressed gratitude to President Pezeshkian for his recent expression of concern over regional developments in South Asia. “I deeply appreciate your sense of concern and brotherly feelings for the people of Pakistan and your ardent desire that the crisis comes to a halt instead of escalating,” he remarked.

Referring to recent tensions with India, the Prime Minister praised Pakistan’s armed forces and citizens for their united and resolute stance. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace and dialogue, stating, “We will work for peace in the region through talks at the table and resolve our outstanding issues, including the Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions.”

While affirming Pakistan’s readiness to discuss matters such as trade, water, and counterterrorism with India, Prime Minister Sharif cautioned that Pakistan would not compromise on its sovereignty. “If India remains aggressive, Pakistan shall defend its territorial integrity. But if they accept our offer, we are ready to talk for the sake of peace,” he said.

Touching on international concerns, the Prime Minister condemned the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, describing it as a “bloodbath” that had led to the deaths of over 50,000 Palestinians. He urged the international community to intervene and ensure a lasting ceasefire. “Pakistan stands by its brothers and sisters in Iran to promote peace, progress, and prosperity,” he added.

Prime Minister Sharif also reiterated Pakistan’s support for Iran’s right to develop a peaceful civilian nuclear program and emphasized the importance of working together on all issues of mutual concern.

Welcoming the Pakistani delegation, President Pezeshkian said Pakistan was a vital neighbor with whom Iran shares centuries-old civilizational and cultural ties. He noted that the two countries hold common views on various regional and international matters, particularly through platforms like the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The Iranian President said the talks focused on expanding cooperation in political, economic, and international domains, with both sides agreeing to continue the implementation of existing agreements. He emphasized the importance of securing the common border against terrorism and criminal activity.

“Peace and stability in Pakistan is in the interest of Iran. Sustaining security and maintaining friendly relations with neighbouring countries are in the interest of both nations,” President Pezeshkian said.

Welcoming the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, the Iranian President advocated for resolving disputes through dialogue. “For ensuring security and stability in the region, neighbouring countries should hold dialogue and maintain positive consultations among themselves and with international partners,” he stated.

He reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and strongly condemned Israeli atrocities in Gaza, calling it a priority issue for the Islamic world.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was warmly received by President Pezeshkian upon arrival. The Pakistani delegation included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatimi.
