Philippine Coast Guard Boosts Coastal Safety in La Union Amid Rising Tourist Arrivals

San Fernando City, The Gulf Observer: As tourist numbers swell along the scenic shores of La Union, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Northwestern Luzon has ramped up coastal safety operations through rigorous training programs, expanded deployment, and intensified public awareness initiatives.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Ivhanne Rillon, Commander of the Civil Relations Group of the PCG District Northwestern Luzon, highlighted the agency’s proactive measures, noting that personnel have been trained in water rescue and basic life support. “We want our responders to be capable not just of reacting, but of preventing the loss of life,” Rillon said.
The enhanced safety protocols are designed to boost the operational readiness of first responders and foster a culture of safety in La Union’s high-traffic beach areas. Currently, nine strategically located PCG substations operate along the coast, each equipped with rescue boats, life-saving gear, and trained personnel. These serve as permanent safety outposts, while additional high-speed response vessels stationed in Pangasinan provide further support.
With Holy Week attracting large crowds, the PCG has been on red alert since last week. However, Rillon emphasized that the agency’s preparedness extends beyond seasonal demand. The PCG is actively recruiting more personnel, expanding resources, and developing long-term strategies to strengthen coastal resilience.
The Coast Guard is also working closely with local government units to educate beachgoers on safe swimming practices, emergency protocols, and local safety regulations. These joint efforts aim to ensure that rising tourism is matched by robust safety infrastructure and community awareness.
On April 16, a mild drowning incident in San Juan, La Union, involved a tourist from Baguio City who experienced fatigue while swimming. Thanks to the swift response of nearby individuals and PCG personnel, the victim was quickly rescued and stabilized—underscoring the vital role of the Coast Guard’s presence.
While the PCG remains steadfast in its mission to protect lives, Rillon reminded the public of their role in accident prevention. “We are here not only to respond but to prevent. Tourism in La Union is thriving, and safety must keep pace through community involvement, preparedness, and sustained presence on our shores,” he stated.
As La Union continues to welcome tourists, the PCG calls on all visitors and residents alike to remain vigilant and cooperate in maintaining safety across its beloved beaches.
