President Aliyev and Prime Minister Meloni Hold High-Level Talks to Strengthen Strategic Partnership

President Aliyev

Baku, The Gulf Observer: On May 4, 2026, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held an expanded meeting with Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic, marking a decisive milestone in the bilateral relations between the two nations.

The high-level talks focused on the “extensive” and “strategic” nature of the partnership, which has become a cornerstone of regional energy security and infrastructure development.

A Symbolic and Strategic Visit

President Aliyev welcomed Prime Minister Meloni, emphasizing the symbolic weight of her visit, which followed her attendance at the 8th European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Armenia. He noted that the direct arrival from Yerevan reflects Italy’s friendly attitude and commitment to Azerbaijan.

“Your visit today will be very decisive for the development of our strategic relations,” President Aliyev stated, highlighting the “excellent discussions” held across various sectors.

Bridging Regions: Energy, Infrastructure, and Culture

Prime Minister Meloni characterized Azerbaijan as a vital partner for Italy, particularly in the current complex international climate. She noted that her visit—the first by an Italian Prime Minister to Baku since 2013—was essential to address the depth of their ongoing cooperation.

Key areas of focus during the expanded meeting included:

  • Strategic Energy Cooperation: Reinforcing Azerbaijan’s role as a primary supplier of oil and gas to Italy.
  • Infrastructure and Connectivity: Expanding the physical and digital links between the Caspian and Mediterranean regions.
  • Cultural and Educational Ties: Acknowledging the collaborative work involving the Italy-Azerbaijan University and broader cultural exchanges.

The “Long Bridge” Vision

A central theme of the dialogue was Azerbaijan’s unique geopolitical position. Prime Minister Meloni highlighted the nation’s role as a strategic “bridge,” expressing Italy’s desire to see this bridge extend further into the Mediterranean.

“In our view, Azerbaijan is our strategic partner… Azerbaijan plays the role of a bridge,” Meloni remarked. “This bridge can be a very long one, extending from here to the Mediterranean region.”

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to explore new avenues for collaboration, asserting that while current cooperation is robust, there remains significant potential for both nations to “do more together” in securing regional prosperity and strategic autonomy.
