Algiers, The Gulf Observer: President of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Saturday issued a message commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of the country’s Glorious War of Liberation, paying tribute to the sacrifices of Algerian martyrs and reaffirming the importance of national unity, sovereignty and the protection of the country’s vital interests.
In his message marking November 1, 1954, President Tebboune recalled the hardships endured by the Algerian people during more than 130 years of French colonial rule, describing the colonial period as a violation of the country’s history, identity, land and human dignity.
He highlighted the successive popular uprisings and resistance movements that emerged across Algeria against colonial rule, culminating in the historic decision of November 1, 1954, when Algerian revolutionaries launched the armed struggle for independence.
The president said the War of Liberation represented the determination of a free people who made immense sacrifices, including the loss of millions of lives, to secure Algeria’s freedom, dignity and sovereignty.
He emphasized that the legacy of the November Revolution continued to serve as a foundation for genuine patriotism, national cohesion and the strength of state institutions. He also called on citizens to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of their ancestors and remain committed to safeguarding the country’s supreme national interests.
Addressing the current regional situation, President Tebboune referred to constitutional authorization and institutional consensus concerning cooperation with a neighbouring sister country. He said the arrangement reflected Algeria’s commitment to protecting its vital interests and taking precautionary measures in response to regional developments.
He added that such cooperation formed part of Algeria’s national security strategy and was consistent with efforts to preserve stability, enabling the country to mobilize its resources and capabilities for development under the framework of the New Algeria.
The president further stressed that sovereign political decision-making remained central to the spirit and principles of the November Revolution.
On the occasion, Tebboune renewed his tribute to the martyrs of the liberation struggle, praying for Allah’s mercy upon their souls. He also conveyed his greetings and respect to the veterans of the War of Liberation, both men and women, wishing them long lives, good health and happiness.
Concluding his message, the president reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to honouring the legacy of its national heroes, declaring: “Long live Algeria, Glory and eternal remembrance to our noble martyrs.”
The 72nd anniversary of the November 1, 1954 Revolution is being observed across Algeria as a national occasion commemorating the beginning of the armed struggle that ultimately led to the country’s independence in 1962.
