Indonesia Calls for Transparent and Impartial Selection of Next UN Secretary-General Amid Global Tensions

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia has called for a credible, transparent and impartial selection process for the next United Nations Secretary-General, emphasizing the need for strong leadership capable of strengthening multilateralism amid rising global tensions.
According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country is closely monitoring the selection process, particularly following the conclusion of the seventh informal straw poll at the UN Security Council on October 30.
In a statement shared through its official social media channels on Sunday, the Foreign Ministry said Indonesia supported a selection process guided by the principles of the UN Charter, transparency, impartiality and a firm commitment to multilateral cooperation.
Indonesia also acknowledged the recent entry of Lana Nusseibeh, nominated by the United Arab Emirates, as part of the ongoing selection process.
The ministry emphasized that the appointment of the next UN Secretary-General came at a critical juncture for both the United Nations and the international community.
Indonesia stressed that the global organization required leadership capable of bringing nations together, promoting respect for international law and advancing institutional reforms to make the UN more effective and responsive to contemporary challenges.
It further expressed the expectation that the incoming Secretary-General would strengthen the representation and voices of developing countries while ensuring tangible outcomes that benefit all nations.
Meanwhile, the selection process remains inconclusive, as the latest Security Council straw poll failed to produce a clear consensus among member states.
According to leaked results reported by Xinhua, former Costa Rican Vice President and former Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Rebeca Grynspan, emerged as a frontrunner, securing 11 favourable votes and four votes against her candidacy.
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi of Argentina, followed with nine favourable votes, four votes against and one member expressing no opinion.
Amid the ongoing selection process, Türkiye officially nominated Feridun Sinirlioğlu, Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), for the position of UN Secretary-General.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan formally conveyed the nomination letter to the President of the UN General Assembly and the President of the UN Security Council on Friday.
The current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, is scheduled to complete his second term at the end of 2026, with his successor expected to assume office on January 1, 2027.
