President Tokayev Backs Recognition of Palestinian State

Astana, The Gulf Observer: Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with participants of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Parliamentary Assembly (CSTO PA) meeting, according to the Akorda press service.

In his address, President Tokayev expressed his support for Russia’s proposal to grant the CSTO PA a permanent status and urged other delegations to back the suggestion. He emphasized that interparliamentary dialogue is crucial for strengthening interstate ties.

The President highlighted that the meeting took place against the backdrop of an unprecedented international crisis. He noted that regional security threats have significantly increased due to geopolitical confrontations, and the potential for global conflict has reached a perilous level. Tokayev expressed concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East, pointing out the rising number of civilian casualties in Gaza, including women and children. He mentioned that over a million people are in dire straits, and numerous international organizations have condemned the humanitarian situation in Palestine as unacceptable, bordering on catastrophic.

Reaffirming Kazakhstan’s firm stance on the issue, President Tokayev reiterated that the only viable solution to the longstanding conflict is the establishment of a Palestinian State with Eastern Jerusalem as its capital, based on the two-state formula. He also commended the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on May 10, 2024, which recognizes the rights of Palestinians to UN membership.
