President Tokayev Briefed on SCO Activities and Strategic Priorities

Astana, The Gulf Observer: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received a detailed briefing on the current activities and strategic priorities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Akorda reported. During the meeting, President Tokayev underscored the unique role of the SCO in fostering political, economic, and cultural cooperation, emphasizing its significant potential for regional and global collaboration.

Highlighting the organization’s priorities, President Tokayev stressed the importance of ensuring regional and global security. He called for further enhancement of the SCO’s activities, urging member states to intensify ties with other international organizations. He also advocated for the promotion of Kazakhstan’s SCO initiative, “World Unity for Just Peace, Harmony, and Development,” as a framework to advance equitable and sustainable cooperation.

In line with the decision of the Council of SCO Heads of State, Nurlan Yermekbayev officially assumed the position of SCO Secretary-General on January 1, 2025. This appointment marks a new chapter in the organization’s leadership, with a focus on strengthening the SCO’s role in addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, founded in 2001, is a prominent regional grouping aimed at fostering mutual trust, security, and development among its member states. With Kazakhstan’s active participation and leadership, the organization continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the geopolitical and economic landscape of the region.
