Sri Lanka Launches Largest Teacher Recruitment Drive with Nearly 30,000 New Appointments

Teacher Recruitment

Anuradhapura, The Gulf Observer: The Sri Lankan government will recruit nearly 30,000 new teachers this year in what Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has described as the largest teacher recruitment initiative in the country’s history.

Addressing a meeting with education authorities of the North Central Province in Anuradhapura, the Prime Minister announced that the recruitment programme will include 23,000 graduate teachers, 6,100 teachers trained through the National Colleges of Education, as well as education graduates.

She said the government is also planning the gradual recruitment of educational administrators and teacher consultants in the coming years as part of broader efforts to strengthen the national education system.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasized that resolving teacher shortages alone would not be sufficient to improve educational outcomes. She stressed the need to address challenges related to the equitable distribution of teachers, educational administration, and effective data management across the sector.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to education, she said substantial investments are being made to enhance the quality of learning and ensure that every child has access to quality education.

The Prime Minister noted that the recruitment drive forms part of a wider strategy to improve educational standards and build a more efficient and responsive education system for the future.
