Sri Lanka PM Calls for Building New Sri Lanka Through Technology and Rule of Law

Colombo, The Gulf Observer: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has said the country is embarking on a new path strengthened by technology and firmly grounded in the rule of law, while safeguarding its long-standing democratic heritage.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while addressing a special commemorative event organized by the Election Commission on September 15 to mark the International Day of Democracy at the Centre for Banking Studies of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in Rajagiriya.

A commemorative stamp and first-day cover were also unveiled at the event to mark the 10th anniversary of the Election Commission’s electronic services (e-Services).

Dr. Amarasuriya emphasized that the rule of law is fundamental to democracy and that all citizens must be treated equally before the law, regardless of their position or status.

She said the government had taken practical measures to restore public confidence in the legal system, which, according to her, had declined in recent years.

Referring to Sri Lanka’s 95-year legacy of universal suffrage, the Prime Minister said the country was now pursuing a path focused on technology, the rule of law, transparency, digitalization, inclusive development and people-centred governance.

She stressed that democracy extends beyond constitutional provisions and is built on trust between citizens and those entrusted with governing the country.

The Prime Minister also said the responsibility of the current generation was to build a democratic, law-abiding and equitable Sri Lanka for future generations, with equal rights and opportunities for all citizens irrespective of race, religion or caste.

The event was attended by Election Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake, Commissioner General of Elections Rasika Peiris, Leena Rikkilä-Tamang, Asia-Pacific Regional Director of International IDEA, ministers, representatives of political parties, senior government officials and other invited guests.

The event underscored Sri Lanka’s continued focus on strengthening democratic institutions while incorporating digital technology and the rule of law into public governance.
