Astana, The Gulf Observer: Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Sayat Isanov as Commander of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan, according to an official announcement from the presidential administration, Akorda.

The appointment was made through a presidential order, as reported by media.

The Command of the Special Operations Forces of Kazakhstan’s Armed Forces was established by a presidential decree on January 19, 2022, as part of the country’s military structure.

The appointment comes amid a series of personnel changes within Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Defense. President Tokayev has recently dismissed several senior defense officials as part of broader developments in the country’s military leadership.

The changes follow a tragic incident during the Khazar Qorgany-2026 military exercises in Kazakhstan’s sector of the Caspian Sea on September 24. Seventeen servicemen were swept out to sea, of whom 14 died and three survived. September 25 was subsequently declared a national day of mourning in Kazakhstan.

The appointment marks a further development in the leadership of Kazakhstan’s armed forces as the country continues to address military organizational and operational matters.
