Sri Lanka

Colombo, The Gulf Observer: Sri Lankan Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Harini Amarasuriya, announced that the government has approved the recruitment of 23,000 teachers in line with a court ruling on teacher appointments, with the process expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Addressing principals of national schools in the Western Province during an Awareness and Capacity Development Programme held at the Ministry of Education’s Isurupaya premises on June 2, the Prime Minister said the new appointments would play a key role in reducing teacher shortages across the country by 2027.

The programme focused on strengthening school leadership and management, with principals receiving briefings on school administration, financial transparency in the implementation of development projects, and preparations for Sri Lanka’s upcoming education reforms. Participants were also given an opportunity to discuss practical challenges faced in the day-to-day management of schools.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya acknowledged the vital contribution of school principals in sustaining educational activities despite resource limitations and operational challenges, expressing the government’s appreciation for their continued commitment to the sector.

She further stated that the government has formulated a long-term strategy aimed at addressing persistent issues within the education system and placing Sri Lanka’s schools on a transformative path that delivers greater opportunities and benefits for all students.

The planned recruitment drive forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s education sector and improve the quality and accessibility of learning nationwide.
