Trump Thanks King Mohammed VI After Morocco Names Strategic Expressway in His Honor
Rabat, The Gulf Observer: US President Donald Trump has expressed his appreciation to King Mohammed VI after Morocco officially named the strategic Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway in his honor, describing the recognition as a “great honor.”
In a message posted on his social media platform, Trump thanked the Moroccan monarch, saying, “Thank you to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, for this great honor. I look forward to traveling the full length of this magnificent expressway one day, and hope it will be soon.”
The highway, officially named the Donald J. Trump Expressway, stretches approximately 1,055 kilometers from Tiznit to Dakhla, serving as one of Morocco’s most significant infrastructure projects by strengthening connectivity between the country’s northern and southern provinces.
Trump’s remarks come amid steadily expanding ties between Rabat and Washington, with bilateral cooperation deepening across political, economic, and strategic sectors in recent years.
Relations between the two countries gained renewed momentum following the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in December 2020. Since then, successive US administrations have reaffirmed their support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the basis for a lasting political solution to the regional dispute.
Washington has consistently described Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only realistic and credible framework for resolving the Sahara issue. As the penholder of United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning the dispute, the United States has also continued to support efforts to revive the UN-led political process while emphasizing the participation of all relevant parties, including Algeria, in negotiations.
The United States also supported the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which reaffirmed the need for a realistic, pragmatic, and lasting political solution and recognized Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a serious and credible proposal for resolving the dispute.
Morocco’s autonomy plan has continued to receive growing international backing, with more than 130 countries expressing support through public endorsements or by opening consulates in the Kingdom’s southern provinces.
The latest exchange between Rabat and Washington follows a series of diplomatic engagements highlighting the close partnership between the two nations. Earlier this month, on the occasion of US Independence Day, King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to President Trump, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to further strengthening its longstanding strategic partnership with the United States.
