Turkmenistan and Iraq Discuss Strengthening Energy Cooperation

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, held a telephone conversation on Wednesday with Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, to discuss bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on energy and diplomatic relations.
During the call, President Berdimuhamedov reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to supporting the establishment and effective operation of the Iraqi diplomatic mission in Ashgabat. This move is expected to further enhance the diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
A key topic of discussion was the successful implementation of the agreement to deliver 10 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas to Iraq via Iran under the SWAP scheme. The official media of Turkmenistan reported that both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress made in executing this energy agreement.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani conveyed Iraq’s readiness to continue strengthening its partnership with Turkmenistan, emphasizing the concrete steps being taken to achieve this objective. Both sides acknowledged that cooperation in the gas sector would open new opportunities to deepen economic ties and foster mutual benefits.
In addition, President Berdimuhamedov extended an invitation to Prime Minister Al-Sudani to attend an international forum in Ashgabat on December 12. The event will commemorate Turkmenistan’s 30th anniversary of neutrality and mark 2025 as the “International Year of Peace and Trust.”
The energy partnership between Turkmenistan and Iraq has been expanding steadily. In October 2023, both countries signed an agreement for the supply of 20 million cubic meters of Turkmen gas per day, reinforcing their commitment to long-term collaboration in the energy sector.
The discussions between the two leaders reaffirm the shared commitment of Turkmenistan and Iraq to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties, particularly in the energy sector, which remains a cornerstone of their cooperation.
