Turkmenistan and Tajikistan Discuss Strengthening UNESCO Cooperation on Intangible Cultural Heritage

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: A meeting was held on 9 June 2026 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Myahri Byashimova, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Turkmenistan, Vafo Niyatbekzoda.
The meeting was also attended by Ch. Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO.
According to official information, the two sides discussed cooperation within the framework of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with a particular focus on the safeguarding and promotion of intangible cultural heritage.
Both parties noted that Turkmenistan and Tajikistan are active participants in international efforts aimed at preserving cultural heritage and emphasized the importance of further strengthening cooperation through UNESCO’s relevant mechanisms.
The discussions also included an exchange of views on opportunities for mutual support within the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further expanding Turkmen-Tajik cooperation both bilaterally and within international organizations, including UNESCO, highlighting shared interests in cultural preservation and multilateral collaboration.
