Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Project Marks New Milestone in South Africa’s Clean Energy Transition

Cape Town, The Gulf Observer: South Africa has reached a significant milestone in its transition to renewable energy with the commencement of commercial operations at the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Energy Facility, a 155-megawatt (MW) project located near Bethal in Mpumalanga. The development underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening energy security, expanding clean electricity generation, and advancing its Just Energy Transition.

The wind facility, officially inaugurated by President Cyril Ramaphosa, is the first phase of a planned 900MW renewable energy programme being developed by Seriti Green. Once fully completed, the project is expected to become one of South Africa’s largest hybrid renewable energy developments, contributing significantly to the national electricity grid while supporting sustainable economic growth.

Situated in Mpumalanga, South Africa’s traditional coal-producing region, the project represents a practical example of the country’s Just Energy Transition by combining renewable energy generation with investments in transmission infrastructure, local supplier development, skills training, employment opportunities, and community upliftment.

The first 155MW phase forms part of a broader initiative aimed at diversifying South Africa’s energy mix and reducing dependence on fossil fuels while ensuring a fair transition for communities historically reliant on coal mining. The project also demonstrates the growing role of public-private partnerships in delivering critical energy infrastructure and translating investment commitments into operational projects.

Government officials said the launch of the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Energy Facility highlights South Africa’s determination to enhance electricity reliability, attract investment, create jobs, and accelerate the shift towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
