Việtnam Reaffirms Commitment to People-Centred UNESCO Vision at Executive Board Session in Paris

Paris, The Gulf Observer: Việtnam has reaffirmed its strong support for a people-centred approach within the UNESCO, emphasizing that all policies and programmes should address the practical needs of communities, particularly vulnerable groups.
Speaking at the 224th session of UNESCO’s Executive Board held in Paris from April 8 to 23, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ngô Lê Văn, who also chairs the Việt Nam National Commission for UNESCO, underscored the importance of multilateralism and international cooperation in addressing global challenges. He noted that UNESCO plays a vital role in fostering dialogue and advancing peace and sustainable development.
Văn reiterated Việt Nam’s backing for the UNESCO80 reform roadmap, which aims to strengthen the organisation’s core mandate, enhance interdisciplinary approaches, and expand global partnerships. He highlighted the significance of reinforcing the role of national commissions and UNESCO field offices while diversifying resources to improve overall effectiveness.
The Vietnamese official also pointed to the country’s evolving development trajectory following the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Việt Nam in early 2026. He stressed that Việt Nam is striving to become a high-income developed nation by the mid-21st century, with a focus on inclusive, equitable, and sustainable growth that leaves no one behind.
Marking the 50th anniversary of Việt Nam–UNESCO relations this year, Văn affirmed that Việt Nam remains committed to being not only an active member but also a constructive partner in building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world.
On the sidelines of the session, the Vietnamese delegation held meetings with senior UNESCO leadership, including Director-General Khaled El-Enany, Deputy Director-General Åsa Regnér, Executive Board Chair Nasser Al Hinzab, and General Conference President Khondker M. Talha. Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation, advancing Việt Nam’s key initiatives, and preparing activities to commemorate the 50-year partnership.
UNESCO leaders and international delegates praised Việt Nam’s dynamic development and strategic vision, describing the country as a model for balancing heritage conservation with socio-economic growth, sustainable tourism, and community livelihoods.
Văn also called for continued support for Việt Nam’s proposal for an International Decade on Culture for Sustainable Development, alongside several heritage nominations, including the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel, Óc Eo–Ba Thê archaeological site, and Con Moong Cave. UNESCO and the International Council on Monuments and Sites pledged assistance in these efforts.
He extended an invitation to UNESCO leadership to visit Việt Nam for the 50th anniversary celebrations and to sign a new cooperation memorandum for the 2026–2030 period. Additionally, invitations were conveyed for major upcoming international events, including the ASEAN Global Learning Cities Conference and the Marine and Island Biosphere Reserve Network conference scheduled in Ho Chi Minh City in November 2026.
UNESCO leaders welcomed Việt Nam’s initiative to host global events and expressed appreciation for its continued engagement and contributions to the organisation’s mission.
