New York, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Wednesday during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The meeting focused on fostering mutual trust and cooperation between China and the EU amidst global challenges.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, praised Borrell for his dedication to promoting China-EU relations, emphasizing that enhanced cooperation between the two parties is beneficial not only for both sides but also aligns with the expectations of the global community. “Strengthening cooperation between China and the EU benefits both sides and aligns with their fundamental and long-term interests, and meets the expectations of the international community,” Wang said.

In light of the increasingly complex international environment, Wang underscored the importance of mutual respect and collaboration between China and the EU. “In a world marked by turmoil and interwoven challenges, China and the EU should enhance mutual trust, close cooperation, respect, and learn from each other, and contribute to the stability of the international and regional situation and the development and progress of mankind,” he noted.

Wang expressed hope that the EU would continue to uphold its strategic autonomy, free from external interference, to ensure the sound and steady development of China-EU relations.

Josep Borrell, for his part, recognized China’s significant global role, calling the country’s rise an “unstoppable historical trend.” He affirmed that Europe must strengthen its cooperation with China, noting, “The world needs China, and Europe should strengthen cooperation with China.” Borrell also addressed the growing challenges facing the world, emphasizing that countries must collaborate to safeguard global peace and security.

During the meeting, Wang and Borrell also exchanged views on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, highlighting the need for constructive dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts.

The discussions mark an important step in deepening China-EU relations amid global uncertainties and underscore the shared responsibility of both sides in promoting peace and stability.
