Oman Participates in World Leaders Climate Action Summit in Baku
Baku, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman participated in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit held in Baku on Tuesday, with a delegation led by Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals. The summit, attended by heads of state and government, centered on expanding efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and addressed the crucial issue of financing the Climate Change Loss and Damage Response Fund.
Eng. Mansoor bin Hamad Al Shuaili, a member of Oman’s negotiating team at the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP29), highlighted the key areas of focus for the Omani delegation, including climate change adaptation, emission reductions, technology and knowledge transfer, and a just energy transition. He emphasized that the financing aspect of climate action remains a top priority, with negotiators pushing for rapid progress in securing funds for affected countries.
Dr. Maryam bint Mohammed Al Busaidi, Head of Oman’s National Programme for Zero Neutrality, underscored the importance of climate finance, noting the high ambitions surrounding this issue at the summit, which will provide critical support for countries. She added that Oman’s negotiators have been working diligently to ensure alignment with the efforts of other nations and groups, including the Arab Summit Group and the Group of 77 and China, while advancing the country’s own climate goals.
Omani negotiators have also made significant strides in the first days of COP29, securing agreement on the rules for a global carbon market, which will be managed by the United Nations. With a clear commitment to achieving zero carbon neutrality by 2050, Oman continues to push for the global collaboration necessary to tackle climate change effectively.
