Azerbaijan’s Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva Highlights Human Rights in Climate Adaptation at COP29

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Sabina Aliyeva, the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, participated in a significant side event at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), as reported by News Hub Consultants.

The event, titled “Using Human Rights Frameworks to Promote Global Adaptation Goal Inclusion and Implementation in Africa,” was organized by the Azerbaijan National NGO Forum in partnership with the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA). It focused on the intersection of human rights and climate change adaptation, specifically addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable regions like Africa.

During her address, Aliyeva emphasized the critical importance of strengthening cooperation among regional networks of national human rights institutions. She highlighted the necessity of integrating human rights approaches into climate change policies to ensure inclusive and equitable adaptation efforts. Aliyeva stressed that protecting human rights is paramount in tackling the climate crisis and ensuring that vulnerable communities are not left behind.

The Ombudsman also put forward a series of proposals to promote joint initiatives that address the impacts of climate change while upholding human rights. Her recommendations included enhancing regional and global cooperation to improve the effectiveness of climate adaptation strategies through a human rights framework.

This side event at COP29 is part of a broader movement to spotlight the need for climate justice, underscoring the interconnectedness of human rights and climate action, particularly in building resilience and adaptation in regions most affected by climate change.
