Bangi, The Gulf Observer: Malaysia will maximize its ASEAN chairmanship to enhance its appeal as a premier destination for investment, tourism, and trade across various industries, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at a Cabinet retreat in Bangi, Anwar underscored Malaysia’s commitment to solidifying its position in key sectors, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, renewable energy, and food security.

“We are setting our course as the ASEAN Chair while increasing Malaysia’s attractiveness as a hub for investment, tourism, and trade in multiple sectors,” he stated.

He further elaborated on Malaysia’s strategic focus areas, including efforts to sustain the semiconductor industry, expand AI and data center initiatives, strengthen renewable energy adoption, and reinforce food security through technological advancements in agriculture.

Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship: A Pivotal Year for Diplomacy and Economy
Addressing Malaysia’s preparations for the ASEAN chairmanship, Anwar commended the dedication and commitment of all stakeholders. However, he emphasized that further refinements are underway to ensure Malaysia delivers an outstanding ASEAN Summit.

“This will enhance Malaysia’s image, and as a trading nation, we must seize this opportunity to strengthen our trade efforts,” he remarked.

Anwar noted that Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship coincides with major diplomatic and economic engagements, making it a crucial year for the nation.

“This will be the first ASEAN Summit involving the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China. Additionally, the Foreign Minister has proposed an ASEAN-United States summit,” he revealed.

Global Engagement and Diplomatic Expansion

Malaysia will host a series of large-scale exhibitions and conferences throughout the year, organized in collaboration with media companies, trading firms, and Gulf nations.

“Starting from May, Malaysia will be a focal point for global media and major corporations from the Arab world, China, the United States, and ASEAN,” Anwar stated.

In a historic diplomatic development, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to visit Malaysia, marking the first such visit. Anwar highlighted that Ramaphosa has pledged support for ASEAN on behalf of the African continent, further strengthening Malaysia’s global diplomatic and economic ties.
