President of Turkmenistan Holds High-Level Talks with Petronas CEO to Expand Bilateral Cooperation

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov held official talks on Wednesday in Ashgabat with Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of Malaysia’s leading oil and gas corporation Petronas, who is visiting the country as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.

According to Turkmen official media, President Berdimuhamedov affirmed Turkmenistan’s openness to concrete proposals aimed at expanding the already successful partnership with Petronas into new and promising areas. He expressed confidence that the current dialogue would serve as an impetus to deepen and diversify relations between the two countries.

The Head of State emphasized Turkmenistan’s interest in broadening cooperation with Malaysian companies not only in the energy sector but also in areas such as the economy, transportation, education, and culture. These sectors, he noted, represent strong potential for mutually beneficial engagement and further people-to-people ties.

In response, the Petronas CEO conveyed his appreciation for the opportunity to operate in Turkmenistan, stating it was a great honor for the company to contribute to the country’s development. He reaffirmed Petronas’ commitment to implementing future projects, underscoring the company’s long-term vision for its operations in Turkmenistan.

The meeting identified the fuel and energy sector as a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation, with both parties reiterating their shared commitment to building a robust, long-term partnership grounded in mutual benefit and trust.

This high-level meeting follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2025 between Turkmennebit and PETRONAS Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn. Bhd., aimed at deepening cooperation in the energy domain.

The visit and resulting discussions underscore the evolving strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and Malaysia, built on shared economic interests and a vision for diversified collaboration.
