Indonesia to Begin Revitalization of More Than 71,000 Schools in 2026

Kudus, The Gulf Observer: The Indonesian government plans to launch a major nationwide school revitalization program covering 71,744 educational institutions in 2026 as part of its commitment to improving learning facilities and addressing infrastructure deficiencies across the country.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti announced the initiative on Saturday after inaugurating an international class at an elementary school in Kudus, Central Java. He stated that the ambitious target significantly expands the government’s earlier plan, which allocated Rp14 trillion (approximately US$780 million) for the renovation of 11,744 schools this year.
According to the minister, the government successfully revitalized 16,167 schools in 2025 and is now scaling up efforts to accelerate improvements in educational infrastructure nationwide.
Mu’ti noted that construction work has already begun at several schools under the initial budget allocation, with some projects expected to be completed and inaugurated in the coming months.
“Regarding the additional 60,000 schools, construction is expected to commence in August or September 2026,” he said.
The revitalization program encompasses educational institutions at all levels, from kindergarten and primary schools to junior and senior high schools. The initiative aims to create safer, more modern, and conducive learning environments for students and teachers throughout Indonesia.
The minister emphasized that the large-scale rehabilitation effort aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to renovate all damaged and inadequate school facilities across the country by the end of 2028.
The government views the program as a key component of its broader education reform agenda, aimed at enhancing the quality of education, reducing disparities in access to proper learning facilities, and supporting the development of Indonesia’s human capital.
With the planned expansion set to begin later this year, the revitalization drive is expected to become one of the largest school infrastructure improvement programs undertaken in the country, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening the national education system and ensuring better learning conditions for millions of students.
