Geneva, The Gulf Observer: Iranian career diplomat Afsaneh Nadipour has been elected as a member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) following a unanimous decision by the Council in Geneva on Wednesday.

Nadipour, who previously served as Iran’s ambassador to Denmark, is a senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran with extensive experience in international affairs.

In a congratulatory message on his X account, Ali Bahreini, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, hailed Nadipour’s election as a historic milestone.

“This is the first time since the establishment of the UN Human Rights Council that a representative from our country has become a member of the Human Rights Council’s Advisory Committee,” Bahreini wrote.

The UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee comprises 18 independent experts representing the five regional groups of the United Nations. Often referred to as the “think tank” or “intellectual arm” of the Human Rights Council, the committee provides expertise and advice on thematic human rights issues.

Members are nominated by their respective governments and elected by the Council during its September session. Each member serves a three-year term, renewable once.

Nadipour’s election marks a significant achievement for Iran’s diplomatic representation in the United Nations system and reflects growing recognition of its engagement in multilateral human rights mechanisms.
