President Prabowo to Visit US for Tariff Pact Signing and Board of Peace Summit

Summit

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to undertake a state visit to the United States in mid-February to sign a reciprocal tariff agreement and participate in the inaugural Board of Peace (BoP) Summit, senior officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that President Prabowo is scheduled to attend the BoP summit on February 19 while also finalizing the long-negotiated tariff agreement with Washington.

Hartarto revealed that Indonesia currently faces a 19 percent import tariff imposed by the US, reduced from 32 percent in earlier phases of negotiations.

“We are waiting for the draft deal to be completed 100 percent,” he said, indicating that the agreement is now in its final stages.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed that negotiations reached the final legal drafting phase during discussions held in Washington, D.C., from January 12 to 19, 2026.

Key Provisions of the Agreement

Under the proposed reciprocal tariff agreement:

  • Indonesia will expand market access for American goods and address non-tariff trade barriers.
  • The US has pledged tariff exemptions for Indonesian commodities not produced domestically, including palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and tea.

The agreement is expected to significantly enhance bilateral trade ties and provide greater certainty for exporters on both sides.

US Trade Agenda

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, speaking to Fox Business on February 10, described Indonesia as “the next big one” in America’s trade strategy, highlighting the Southeast Asian nation’s population of over 250 million as a rapidly expanding market for US products.

The upcoming visit underscores Jakarta’s commitment to strengthening economic diplomacy and deepening strategic engagement with Washington. Observers note that the signing of the tariff agreement could mark a new chapter in Indonesia–US trade relations, fostering greater market integration and long-term economic cooperation.
