Morocco, Finland Sign Water Cooperation Agreement to Boost Technical and Business Partnerships

Agadir, The Gulf Observer: Morocco and Finland have signed an agreement establishing a joint cooperation group in the water sector, marking a significant step toward strengthening bilateral collaboration and expanding technical and commercial partnerships between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, and Finland’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sari Essayah, according to a statement issued by the Finnish government.
The signing follows discussions held between the two ministers in Morocco in March and coincides with Baraka’s official visit to Finland from June 8 to 10 at the invitation of Essayah. The ministers are also scheduled to hold bilateral talks in Helsinki aimed at advancing cooperation in water resource management and sustainable development.
Speaking after the agreement was signed, Essayah highlighted Finland’s internationally recognized expertise in water management technologies, including groundwater treatment, smart water solutions, purification systems, wastewater recycling and sustainable water use practices.
She noted that growing international demand for Finnish expertise demonstrates the increasing importance of innovative water solutions in addressing global water challenges.
Under the agreement, the newly established working group will focus on three priority areas: groundwater management, dam operations and wastewater recycling. Both sides believe these sectors offer substantial opportunities for expanding cooperation and strengthening trade relations.
The initiative comes at a time when countries worldwide are facing increasing challenges linked to water security, climate change and the sustainable management of natural resources.
Morocco has experienced significant pressure on its water resources in recent years, including a prolonged period of drought lasting approximately seven years. Although recent rainfall has helped alleviate immediate shortages, the country continues to pursue long-term strategies to strengthen water resilience.
These efforts include expanding desalination capacity, developing dam infrastructure and implementing adaptive water management policies aimed at ensuring sustainable supplies and reducing dependence on rainfall.
The Finnish government emphasized the importance of enhanced international cooperation in addressing water-related challenges, noting that water security for more than two billion people is already under threat globally. It stressed the need for countries to work together to address issues related to climate change, water scarcity, growing demand and the sustainable use of water resources.
As part of his visit, Baraka is expected to meet representatives of leading Finnish companies specializing in water technologies. The companies will present their expertise and innovative solutions in the sector, creating opportunities for future partnerships and investment.
The two ministers are also scheduled to participate as speakers at a dedicated event showcasing Finland’s capabilities in water management and sustainable technologies, further promoting cooperation between Moroccan and Finnish stakeholders in the sector.
