Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco international Achraf Hakimi has praised veteran goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi, describing him as the true leader of the national football team and crediting his vast experience and influence as invaluable to the Atlas Lions.

Speaking in an interview with ABtalks, the Paris Saint-Germain defender said Mohamedi commands immense respect within the squad, with every player listening to and following his guidance both on and off the pitch.

When asked who the real leader of the Moroccan national team is, Hakimi did not hesitate to name the 37-year-old goalkeeper, citing his years of service and wealth of international experience with the Atlas Lions.

Hakimi stressed that Mohamedi’s leadership extends far beyond his role on the field, emphasizing that his influence remains equally important whether he is in the starting lineup or supporting the team from the bench.

“He has played many matches and participated in the World Cup and several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, so I believe he is a leader, even if he isn’t playing, and that is what matters most,” Hakimi said.

The defender added that Mohamedi’s words carry significant weight within the squad because of his experience and commitment to the team.

“When he speaks, everyone listens to him and respects him, and we also follow him because he has immense experience,” Hakimi remarked.

Hakimi further noted that Mohamedi is one of the most senior members of the national team, making his advice particularly valuable to younger players.

“I believe he is the oldest player in the national team, and that is important. When someone with this kind of experience speaks to you for the good of the team, we must listen to him,” he said.

Mohamedi is part of the 26-man Morocco squad led by head coach Mohamed Ouahbi for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his third consecutive appearance at football’s biggest tournament, where his experience is expected to play a vital role in guiding the Atlas Lions both on and off the field.
