Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia has assumed the chairmanship of the ASEAN Committee in Washington, D.C. (ACW), with the aim of strengthening coordination among ASEAN member states, enhancing the bloc’s collective voice and expanding cooperation with the United States.

The leadership transfer took place at the Embassy of Cambodia in Washington, where Cambodian Ambassador to the United States Koy Kuong formally handed over the chairmanship to Indonesian Ambassador Indroyono Soesilo.

In a statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Washington on Saturday, Indroyono said Indonesia’s leadership of the ACW demonstrated Southeast Asia’s readiness to become a strong, relevant and constructive partner for the United States and the international community.

He said the ACW’s agenda had expanded beyond traditional diplomatic, political and security issues to include trade, investment, connectivity, education, the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, energy, health, innovation, maritime security and space technology.

Indonesia’s priorities during its chairmanship include promoting the digital economy and AI, clean energy, education and talent development, health, research and innovation, maritime security, climate resilience, trade, investment and supply-chain cooperation.

Indonesia also seeks to strengthen ASEAN centrality and encourage Southeast Asia to play an active role in promoting a peaceful, stable, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

The chairmanship will provide Indonesia with an opportunity to showcase its strengths within the ASEAN framework, including in culture, education, trade, investment, tourism, innovation and people-to-people exchanges.

The collective diplomatic approach is expected to complement Indonesia-US bilateral relations by bringing the shared perspectives of ASEAN member states to their engagement with Washington.

The ACW provides a platform for consultation and dialogue between ASEAN and US institutions, including the US Department of State, White House, National Security Council, Department of Commerce and other federal agencies.

Indonesia’s chairmanship will begin with ASEAN Cultural Day at the Civic Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, on October 14, 2026. Organized in cooperation with the ASEAN Spouse Circle, the event will showcase ASEAN’s cultural diversity and promote friendship between the regional bloc and the local community.
