“Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” manifested in West Kutai: Jokowi

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Joko Widodo lauded the people of West Kutai District, East Kalimantan Province, for their success in inculcating the national spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity).

“Here, I see that the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika can be manifested in real life. Indonesia is a big country, a home to an array of ethnic groups, religions, and cultures,” Jokowi, as the president is known, remarked while attending the Dangai Ehau Festival in West Kutai, East Kalimantan, on Friday.

Based on a video broadcast on Friday, Jokowi remarked that West Kutai District is inhabited by people from different ethnic groups, such as Dayak Aoheng, Dayak Tunjung, Dayak Kenyah, Dayak Benuaq, and Malay.

All ethnic groups in West Kutai have been successful in preserving harmony in the district despite following different traditions, he noted.

“Ethnic groups here live in harmony and joy while upholding the value of mutual respect. I see and I know that here, everyone is living in concord and fostering cohesiveness,” he stated.

Jokowi also expressed joy for the opportunity to visit West Kutai District to participate in the Dangai Ehau Festival and commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the district.

“It is our responsibility to preserve and advance local cultures and stimulate the creative industry in regions,” he remarked.

Furthermore, Jokowi stated that by holding cultural festivals, such as Dangai Ehau, Indonesian people can share knowledge on the traditions, cultural values, tolerance, and harmony that have been passed down by their ancestors.

In his speech, he also extended his gratitude to the people of West Kutai District, especially the Dayak communities, for bestowing a traditional title on him and supporting the government’s efforts to develop the planned new capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan.
